Styluses and Accessories: Touch Model Compatibility

A stylus only works with models that have the appropriate touch technology.

Why a stylus is not universal

Styluses for laptops with touchscreens (e.g., ThinkPad X1 Yoga or similar convertibles) operate using a specific recognition technology (e.g., an active stylus with battery power or a passive capacitive one). A stylus with a different technology will either not be recognized by the screen at all or will work without pressure sensitivity.

Active vs. Passive Stylus

An active stylus has its own power supply (battery) and transmits additional data (pressure, tilt) via Bluetooth or a special protocol. A passive stylus works like a regular capacitive finger, without pressure sensitivity – it is suitable for any capacitive touchscreen but with limited functionality.

Attaching the stylus to the body

Some models have a magnetic or mechanical slot for storing the stylus – the shape and magnets are selected for a specific cutout in the body and are not always universal even between models of the same brand.

Typical customer mistakes

  • "My laptop has a touchscreen – any stylus will work" – an active stylus only works with the supported recognition technology of a specific model.
  • "The stylus isn't writing – it must be defective" – often the reason is a dead stylus battery or incompatible technology, not a defect.
