External Monitor and Hinge Condition: How to Avoid Unnecessary Strain
Working with the lid open at a certain angle for an extended period can accelerate hinge wear.
How an external monitor affects laptop usage
When working with an external monitor connected, the laptop lid is often left open in one position (or in "clamshell mode" with a stand) — both scenarios have their nuances for hinges and cooling.
Clamshell mode
If you work only with an external monitor and keep the lid closed, make sure that the ventilation openings are not blocked by a stand or the table surface, as the cooling system still needs airflow even in closed mode.
If the lid is constantly open at one angle
Keeping the lid in one extreme position (fully open) for a long time is not inherently harmful to quality hinges, but it's worth avoiding sudden movements when regularly opening/closing with the same abrupt motion.
Signs of hinge wear
Lid play, uneven movement when opening, creaking, or sticking during movement — more details can be found in a separate article on hinge and casing repair.
Practical advice
If you primarily plan to work with an external monitor, consider a laptop stand for clamshell mode with proper ventilation — this evenly distributes the load on both cooling and hinge mechanics.
