TrackPoint: Features of the built-in ThinkPad joystick
The red "eraser" of the ThinkPad is not just a keyboard element, but a separate assembly with its own compatibility.
What is TrackPoint
TrackPoint (colloquially known as "nipple" or "eraser") is a pointing device built into the keyboard, primarily characteristic of the Lenovo ThinkPad line. Technically, it's a strain gauge sensor under a cap, integrated into the keyboard itself, rather than a separate module.
Why TrackPoint is tied to the keyboard
In most models, the TrackPoint is part of the keyboard assembly: replacing the keyboard means replacing the TrackPoint along with it. Only interchangeable caps are sold separately (different textures: smooth, dimpled, soft) — they are compatible with each other within the standard mounting, unlike the sensor itself.
TrackPoint buttons — a separate part
The three buttons below the touchpad (left/right/scroll) for use with the TrackPoint are usually located on the touchpad board or on the palm rest — this is physically a different part than the TrackPoint sensor itself in the keyboard.
Typical customer mistakes
- "TrackPoint isn't working — I'll just replace the cap" — If the sensor itself isn't working, the cap won't help; a new keyboard is needed.
- "All TrackPoint caps are the same" — They differ in texture and, less commonly, in mounting height between generations.
How to choose a spare part from us
If the TrackPoint cursor is not working, a complete keyboard assembly is needed. If you just want to replace the cap, any standard cap with the same mounting will work.
