Lenovo ThinkPad T-Series: Part Compatibility Across Generations

T440-T590 and newer — where cables, power connectors, and batteries change between generations.

Why "ThinkPad T-Series" Is Not One Model for Compatibility

The T-series has been produced for over 10 years (T440 → T590 → modern T14/T16), and during this time, Lenovo has changed key interfaces several times. The most significant shift is the transition from a round power connector to USB-C roughly after the T480/T480s: older and newer models use fundamentally different chargers.

What Is Usually Common Within a Generation

  • Keyboards and touchpads of similar models within one generation (e.g., T440-T460) often have the same cable (flex cable) and mounting.
  • Batteries sometimes fit between neighboring models (the same Part Number), but this needs to be checked specifically and not assumed as a rule.
  • Coolers are almost always tied to a specific model and CPU/GPU configuration; they are not interchangeable between models, even within the same generation.

The Main Pitfall

The most common mistake customers make is assuming that the "T-series" is a single line with full interchangeability. In reality, each specific model (T440 vs. T450 vs. T480) can have differences in cables (flex cables), mountings, and connectors, despite a similar appearance and series name.

How to Check Compatibility for Your Model

Specify the exact model (T440, T450, T460, T470, T480, T490, etc.) — we will cross-reference the specific part with our compatibility database, rather than relying on the series name in general.
