Hinges: Left vs. Right, Metal vs. Plastic

Hinges bear the entire weight of the display lid – a component that wears out unnoticed until it starts to wobble.

Left and Right Hinges – Not Interchangeable

In the vast majority of laptops, the left and right hinges have a mirrored, not identical, design. These are different spare parts with different Part Numbers, despite their outward similarity.

Metal vs. Plastic Hinges

Some models feature a metal hinge frame with a plastic casing, while others have an entirely plastic construction. Metal hinges are generally more durable, but replacement is only possible with the same type intended by the specific model's design.

Signs of Worn Hinges

  • The lid does not stay open on its own; it falls under its own weight.
  • Cracking or squeaking when opening/closing.
  • Cracks in the plastic casing around the hinge due to excessive stress.

Common Customer Misconceptions

  • "The hinges look the same on the left and right" – They are structurally mirrored and cannot be swapped.
  • "I'll tighten the screws and it will be like new" – If the hinge's axle or mechanism itself is worn, tightening the screws will not restore the rigidity of the lid's fixation.
