Repairing Your Own Laptop vs. Buying a Used Replacement

When to invest in repairing your current device, and when it's more cost-effective to replace it with a used alternative.

When Repair is More Cost-Effective

If the malfunction is localized (a single component – battery, keyboard, display) and the rest of the system (motherboard, processor, storage) is in good condition, repairing the specific component is usually cheaper than a full device replacement.

When Replacement is More Cost-Effective

If the motherboard itself is faulty (the most expensive component to replace) on an already old model, or if several problems accumulate simultaneously (old RAM configuration, worn-out battery, slow HDD) – the cost of a full repair can approach or exceed the price of a comparable used device.

Practical Assessment Rule

Compare the cost of a specific repair (see separate articles on repair services) with the price of a used device of the same or better configuration in the Lapto.de catalog – if the repair cost exceeds approximately 40-50% of the replacement price, consider replacing the device.

Intermediate Option: Trade-in via Ankauf

If you decide to replace your device, you can sell your old one through our buyback service (Ankauf, more details in a separate article) and use these funds to purchase a replacement, reducing the actual cost of the transition.

Our Recommendation

For localized malfunctions (a single part) – repair. For comprehensive wear and tear of several key components simultaneously – it's worth comparing the full repair cost with a used replacement before making a decision.
