Traveling with a Laptop: Temperature and Transportation

A few practical rules for safely transporting your laptop on the go.

Temperature Fluctuations — The Main Risk

A sharp transition from a cold external environment to a warm room can cause moisture to condense inside the case. Allow the laptop a few minutes to warm up to room temperature in its bag before turning it on.

Transportation in Airplane Baggage

It is recommended to carry your laptop (and especially its lithium-ion battery) in your carry-on luggage, not in the baggage compartment — this is also a requirement of most airlines for devices with lithium batteries.

Protection Against Physical Shocks on the Road

Soft padding in a bag or a separate sleeve (more details in a separate article about sleeves) significantly reduces the risk of damage from accidental bumps or drops of the bag.

Full Shutdown or Sleep Mode

For short trips, sleep mode is acceptable. For long journeys (flights, multi-hour trips), a full shutdown is recommended — it reduces power consumption and the risk of overheating in a closed bag.

Humidity and Rain Protection

Avoid direct contact with water; if the bag gets wet on the outside, check that it is dry inside before removing and turning on the device.
