NVMe vs. SATA: Practical Differences
Both are SSDs, but with different data transfer speeds.
Technical Differences in Brief
SATA SSDs are limited by the speed of the SATA interface (inherited from the HDD era). NVMe connects directly via PCIe and is significantly faster in terms of peak data transfer speed.
Where the Difference is Noticeable in Practice
Operating system and large program loading is slightly faster on NVMe. Copying a large number of files or working with large projects (video editing, compilation) shows a more significant difference.
Where the Difference is Almost Unnoticeable
Typical office work (browser, Office, video calls) – both types feel almost equally fast compared to an old HDD.
How to Check Which Type Your Model Supports
Not every model has an M.2 NVMe slot – some only support SATA (2.5" or M.2 SATA). More details can be found in a separate article on drive compatibility (Festplatten HDD/SSD).
Practical Advice
If your model supports both types, NVMe offers future-proofing, but for typical office work, a standard SATA SSD is perfectly sufficient and usually cheaper.
