Laptops for development and IT tasks
Compilation, virtual machines, multiple IDEs simultaneously — where power is truly needed.
What burdens a developer's laptop
Compiling large projects, Docker containers, virtual machines, and several heavy IDEs/editors simultaneously — this genuinely strains the CPU and especially RAM, unlike office tasks.
Priorities for development
- RAM 16GB+, preferably 32GB — if you plan to use virtual machines or Docker with multiple containers simultaneously.
- NVMe SSD, if the model supports it — faster than SATA SSD for operations involving many small files (typical for project builds).
- Processor Core i7 from previous generations or newer i5 — compilation and virtualization significantly benefit from more threads.
Is a dedicated graphics card necessary?
For web/backend development — no. For mobile development with emulators or working with ML/CV — a model with a dedicated graphics card is worth considering (e.g., HP ZBook, see a separate article on workstations).
Recommended models
ThinkPad T/X1-series with maximum RAM configuration, HP ZBook if a graphics card is needed for virtualization or ML tasks.
