How to read the MPN and check compatibility yourself

The Manufacturer Part Number is the most accurate identifier for a part, more reliable than the laptop model name.

What is an MPN

MPN (Manufacturer Part Number) is a unique manufacturer code that identifies a specific version of a part, unlike the laptop model name, which can cover several different configuration options. Two laptops of the same model, released in different batches, may have parts with different MPNs.

Where to find the MPN on a part

  • On batteries — usually on the sticker at the bottom
  • On screens — on the back of the panel, often on a small sticker
  • On motherboards — printed directly on the board via silkscreening
  • On keyboards — on the back, sometimes on the ribbon cable itself

How to use the MPN for verification

The most accurate way to select a part is to compare the MPN of the old (defective) part with the MPN of the new one. If the MPNs match completely, compatibility is guaranteed. If the MPNs are different but similar (e.g., only the suffix differs), additional verification is required; this does not always mean compatibility.

What to do if the MPN is not visible or has worn off

In this case, the selection is made based on the laptop model and part type — with a lower level of confidence (confidence: medium or low in our system, see a separate article on confidence levels).

How we use MPNs internally

Our system matches the part's MPN with a database of compatible models through several external sources and our own catalog — if you know the MPN of the old part, tell us immediately; this speeds up accurate selection.
