Dell Latitude After Rebranding (3xxx/5xxx/7xxx): What Changed

Dell removed the 'E' from the numbering – 5400, 5590, 7270, and other post-rebranding models.

What is Latitude "rebranding"

Around 2016-2017, Dell gradually transitioned from E-prefixed numbering (E5470, E7470) to simple three-digit numbers (5480, 7480, and later 5400, 5590, 7270, etc.). This was not just a name change – post-rebranding models feature an updated internal design, which is not always compatible with predecessors of the same "number without E".

Three Post-Rebranding Lines

  • 3xxx — entry-level line (analogous to the former E3xxx)
  • 5xxx — standard business line (5400, 5590, etc.)
  • 7xxx — premium compact line (7270, 7280, 7420, etc.)

What is More Often Unified

Chargers (wattage, USB-C connector type for newer models) are more often shared within the entire line of the same generation. Batteries and displays are specific to a particular model.

Common Customer Mistake

"The 5400 and the old E5470 are both Dell Latitude 5-series, so the parts should be compatible" — rebranding usually involved an update to the internal design; old and new models with the same "number" are not guaranteed to be compatible.
