When to change thermal paste yourself: signs

Thermal paste dries out over time and loses its heat transfer effectiveness — typical signs that it's time to refresh it.

What thermal paste does

It fills microscopic irregularities between the processor/graphics chip and the cooler's heatsink, ensuring efficient heat transfer. Over time (usually a few years), the paste dries out and loses effectiveness.

Typical signs of dried-out thermal paste

  • The fan runs at maximum speed even with light tasks
  • Performance throttling under load (the system artificially reduces speed due to overheating)
  • The laptop feels noticeably hotter to the touch than before with the same tasks

Can thermal paste be replaced independently?

Technically possible, but it requires complete disassembly of the case down to the motherboard, specific tools, and caution with cables — for most users, it's safer to entrust this procedure to a service center.
