Battery shows incorrect percentage: calibration

If Windows shows a charge that doesn't match reality, the problem is often software-related, not hardware.

Why discrepancies occur

Over time, the battery controller can "lose its way" in calculating the full charge/discharge cycle, showing an inaccurate percentage despite the battery being physically sound.

How to calibrate the battery

  1. Charge the laptop to 100%
  2. Use it until it's completely discharged and automatically shuts down
  3. Charge it again without interruption to 100%

This cycle allows the controller to recalibrate its reference point.

When it's NOT a software problem

If, after calibration, the indicator is still unstable, or the actual battery life is significantly shorter than expected, then it's a matter of actual battery wear (more details in a separate article about batteries), not calibration.

How to check the real status without calibration

The powercfg /batteryreport command in Windows shows the actual capacity relative to the nominal capacity — a more accurate diagnostic method than just the charge percentage on the screen.

Battery warranty at Lapto.de

If the laptop was purchased from Lapto.de and the actual remaining capacity is below the guaranteed threshold without signs of a calibration error, this is covered by the warranty (more details in a separate article about warranty conditions).
