IPS vs. TN vs. OLED in Plain English

Three types of display panels found in used business laptops — what's truly noticeable in practice.

TN — The Simplest and Cheapest Type

Narrower viewing angles (colors distort when viewed from an angle), lower color accuracy. Found in more budget-friendly and older models.

IPS — The Standard for Modern Business Laptops

Wide viewing angles, more accurate colors — this is what most users mean by a "good screen." The vast majority of models in the Lapto.de catalog with recent-generation displays use IPS.

OLED — Less Common, Premium Segment

The deepest black and highest contrast, as each pixel illuminates independently (unlike LCD backlighting). Found in select premium models, usually more expensive to repair when replaced.

What This Means for Display Replacement

The panel type is a critical compatibility parameter for replacement (you cannot install an OLED instead of an IPS without changing the rest of the electronics) — more details in a separate article on display compatibility.

Practical Advice

For office tasks, the difference between IPS and TN is immediately noticeable (viewing angles), while the difference between a good IPS and OLED is mostly apparent only in multimedia content.
