HP ZBook (G3-G5): Mobile Workstations, Cooling, and Graphics Features

ZBook is a separate category from EliteBook/ProBook, featuring discrete graphics and more powerful cooling.

How ZBook Differs from Regular HP Business Laptops

ZBook is positioned as a mobile workstation — almost always with discrete graphics (often NVIDIA Quadro), a more powerful cooling system, and, accordingly, different power components and coolers than in regular EliteBook/ProBook models.

Discrete Graphics in ZBook — MXM Module or Soldered?

It depends on the specific generation and model — older ZBooks (G3-G4) more often had a removable MXM module, while newer ones tend towards soldered graphics. See the separate article on graphics cards and MXM for checking details.

ZBook Cooling System

Due to the higher TDP of components, ZBook coolers are more complex (often with two fans and more heat pipes) — and specific to the configuration of a particular model (the CPU+GPU combination determines which cooler is suitable).

Common Customer Mistake

"ZBook is just a more powerful EliteBook, the cooler should be similar" — the cooling system design differs significantly due to discrete graphics.
