Case Parts: Top Case, Bottom Case, Palmrest

A laptop's chassis consists of several separate parts – each with its own compatibility.

Top Case, Bottom Case, Palmrest — What's What

The top case (upper part with keyboard and palmrest) is often sold as a single assembly with the keyboard and touchpad. The bottom case (lower cover) is a separate part, usually without electronics. The palmrest is the area for the wrists; sometimes it's part of the top case, and sometimes a separate part, depending on the model's design.

Why the top case is often sold with the keyboard

In many models, the keyboard is glued or screwed directly into the top case, and separating them without damage is impossible – which is why suppliers sell this assembly as a whole.

Case color and revision

Case parts may differ in color and surface texture between revisions of the same model – even if the mounting points match, aesthetic consistency is not guaranteed without checking the specific revision.

Typical customer mistakes

  • "I'll buy only the palmrest separately" – This is only possible if the model's design allows for the separation of the palmrest and top case.
  • "The case of the same model is always the same color" – The manufacturer might have changed the finish or shade during the model's production cycle.
