Fingerprint and Smart Card Reader on Business Models: Setup
Many business laptops have built-in biometric scanners and card readers—how to activate them after a system reinstallation.
What devices are found on business models
Fingerprint readers and Smart Card Readers (often for corporate authentication) are common on business lines such as ThinkPad, Latitude, and EliteBook.
Why they might not work immediately after a Windows reinstallation
These devices require special manufacturer drivers that are not included in the basic set of Windows Update drivers. You need to download them separately from the manufacturer's support website for your specific model.
Setting up Windows Hello for fingerprint
After installing the driver: Settings → Accounts → Sign-in options → Fingerprint recognition (Windows Hello) — and follow the on-screen instructions to register your fingerprint.
Smart Card Reader — typical use
Primarily for corporate authentication via company certificates — if you are buying a used laptop for personal use, this feature might not be needed at all, and you might not need to install the driver.
If the scanner is not recognized by the system even after the driver is installed
It might be a hardware malfunction of the component — contact us for diagnostics to see if it's covered by warranty, depending on the cause.
