Hard Drives and SSDs: 2.5" SATA, Thickness, Form Factor

Disk size in inches is just the first of several compatibility parameters.

2.5" Form Factor — Basic Compatibility

The vast majority of laptop HDDs and SATA SSDs have a standard 2.5-inch form factor and connect via a SATA connector — in this sense, they are interchangeable between different laptop models.

Disk Thickness — A Hidden Detail

2.5" drives come in various thicknesses — the most common are 7mm and 9.5mm. Older laptops with space for an optical drive or a thicker HDD might not accept an overly thin drive without an adapter, and conversely, a thin bay will physically not accept a thicker drive.

SSD Instead of HDD — Always Possible?

A 2.5" SATA SSD connects the same way as an HDD and, in most cases, is a direct replacement. The speed gain is limited by the throughput of the laptop's SATA interface itself (SATA II/III).

Typical Customer Mistakes

  • "Any 2.5" drive will fit into any laptop" — correct regarding the connector, but the disk thickness must match the bay.
  • "SSD is always many times faster than HDD" — the performance increase is limited by the SATA controller version on the motherboard; older SATA II will not unleash the full potential of a modern SSD.

How to Choose a Drive with Us

Provide your laptop model and, if possible, the thickness of the old drive — we will suggest a compatible form factor.
