HP EliteBook 8xxx vs. 840/850 G-series: Different Generations

The EliteBook 8460p and EliteBook 840 G3 are both EliteBooks, but there's a whole generation of design difference between them.

Two Eras of EliteBook Naming

Older numbering (8460p, 8470p, 8540p) used a letter after three digits. Newer numbering switched to the "840 G1", "840 G3" format, where the G-number denotes the generation. This isn't just a name change — the G-series has a fundamentally different internal architecture, a thinner chassis, and different power connectors.

G-series: Generation Matters as Much as Model

Even within the G-series, each generation (G1, G3, G5) can have differences in cables and mounts, although the basic design is more similar between adjacent G-numbers than between the old 8xxx-numbering and any G-series.

Common Customer Mistake

"The 8460p and 840 G3 are both EliteBook 840-category" — the old 8460p numbering has nothing in common with the G-series in terms of internal design, despite the perceived similarity in the "840 line."
