Cases and Bags: What Really Protects Your Laptop
Not all cases are equally effective – let's figure out what to look for.
Soft sleeve — basic protection
Protects against scratches and light impacts when transported in a bag or backpack. Not designed for standalone carrying without an additional bag or protection from drops.
Backpack/bag with a separate laptop compartment
A more rigid compartment structure and cushioning around the edges provide better protection in case of accidental bag drops or impacts with nearby objects.
What to look for when choosing
- Tight laptop fit inside the compartment (no free movement)
- Cushioning material around the perimeter, especially in the corners
- Absence of hard objects in the same compartment (they can scratch
Do you need an additional protective case for the laptop body itself?
For business laptops with a durable body (e.g., ThinkPads with hardened materials), an additional hard case for the body itself is usually not critical — a good carrying bag is sufficient.
The most important rule
No case replaces careful handling — avoid placing heavy objects on top of a bag with a laptop, even in a high-quality case.
