Activating Windows on a Used Laptop: How It Works
A Windows license is often tied to the motherboard, not the disk—let's break down what that means for you.
Digital License Tied to Hardware
On most business laptops with pre-installed Windows, the license is stored in the BIOS/UEFI of the motherboard (Digital License)—activation occurs automatically when connected to the internet, without the need to manually enter a key.
Why Reinstalling Windows Doesn't Reset Activation
Since the license is tied to the hardware, not to a specific system installation, a clean reinstallation of the same Windows edition (Home/Pro) will automatically reactivate when connected to the network.
What to Check When You Receive a Laptop from Lapto.de
If the laptop was purchased with pre-installed Windows, activation happens automatically. You can check the status in Settings → System → Activation.
If Windows Is Not Activated
The most common reason is a lack of internet connection during the first boot. Connect to the network and wait a few minutes; activation usually occurs automatically for a hardware-bound license.
If the Laptop Was Purchased Without Windows
You will need your own license (more details in a separate article about purchasing without an OS)—activation is done manually by entering a key.
